Colonial Life celebrates 60 years of public sector service

September 14, 2015

Since 1955, the company has been working for those who work for America.

COLUMBIA, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ever since Colonial Life first offered workplace benefits to the members of the N.C. Department of State Government in 1955, the company has worked for those who make America safer, smarter and stronger.

Over the past six decades, that account has grown to include more than 6,200 policyholders who work for the N.C. Department of Public Safety, which includes the N.C. Department of Corrections, N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice, N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles and N.C. Highway Patrol.

Colonial Life celebrates this week that first public sector account with a new presence on the web (coloniallife.com/publicsector) featuring a new video touting the company’s commitment to public agencies and other resources to help save taxpayer funds while offering great benefits to those who serve America.

The public is encouraged to take part in a virtual anniversary celebration on social media between 2 and 4 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Learn more about our public sector work by following @ColonialLifePS on Twitter and use #60years to take part in the conversation.

“Colonial Life tremendously values its long relationships with the public sector market,” said Carey Adamson, vice president of Public Sector Market Services. “We’ve never faltered in our continued commitment to the government and education entities we serve in all 50 states. Our focus for the next 60 years is to continue building on our experience and expertise to serve the needs of those who protect America.”

One of those public sector customers is the City of Columbia, S.C., Colonial Life’s hometown.

“These are challenging times in which to be leading a city,” said Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin. “Residents and business owners are demanding more services and people expect to pay the same – or less – for those services. City governments must find ways to control any costs that they can to be the best stewards of our residents’ hard-earned tax dollars. One way we’ve done that is by partnering with Colonial Life, a benefits provider that has been in business for more than 75 years.”

Five thousand local governments, 34 state governments and 2,700 educational agencies now rely on Colonial Life for voluntary benefits in the workplace. The company helps those public sector agencies by communicating the value of benefits programs, promoting participation in wellness programs, reducing enrollment expenses through turnkey solutions, boosting tax savings, and providing easy online services for simple administration.

Colonial Life’s strong support and service in the industry has led to partnerships with some of the most-respected public sector organizations in the country. This helps the company understand employees' benefit needs and help provide the right solutions. Those partners include the U.S. Conference of Mayors, International Personnel Managers Association, National Joint Powers Alliance and National Institute of Governmental Purchasing and Association of School Business Officials.
