Company founded in 1939 is a national leader in the employee
benefits industry
COLUMBIA, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
The tail end of the Great Depression with World War II on the horizon
may seem like an unlikely time to start a new insurance company. Add an
unconventional all-woman sales force and the picture begins to emerge of
a company that broke the mold from its founding.

That hasn’t changed in 75 years.
On April 18, Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company celebrates more
than seven decades of business and community leadership — years marked
by innovation, entrepreneurship and opportunity. The company has grown
from its founding in Columbia, S.C., to a national leadership position
in the employee benefits industry.
Along the way, the company helped pioneer many practices now commonplace
in the industry, including marketing at the workplace, making benefits
easy and affordable to purchase through payroll deduction, and helping
employees understand their benefits with one-to-one laptop enrollments.
“We have a long history of helping America’s workers protect the vitally
important things they’ve worked so hard to build,” said President and
CEO Randy Horn. “Along the way, we’ve developed a reputation for
innovation and excellence, for working to a higher standard to meet our
customers’ needs.”
The entrepreneurial spirit of Colonial Life’s founders continues today
as the model of the company’s distribution system, which includes more
than 8,000 independent sales agents across the country. “Colonial Life’s
large national sales organization is unusual in the industry and allows
us to meet face-to-face with employers and employees at businesses of
all sizes in every corner of the country,” Horn said. The company also
partners with thousands of insurance brokers to offer its products and
services.
The company celebrated its anniversary this month by making significant
contributions in its local community, including building a Habitat for
Humanity home. Annual corporate and employee charitable giving totals $2
million, while the company’s economic impact in South Carolina alone
totals approximately $100 million a year.
