Unum Releases Videos to Help Spanish-Speaking Customers Understand Products and Services

Videos Part of Company's Commitment to Better Serve Hispanic Market

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As its services for Hispanic customers continue to expand, Unum (NYSE:UNM) has released a new series of educational videos in Spanish to help customers learn about its employee benefits products and services.

"The Hispanic population is growing faster than any other ethnic minority," said Bilda Acuna, assistant vice president of Unum's Hispanic initiative. "One quarter of Unum's customers have Spanish-speaking employees, and it is important for us to create a benefits education approach that is as relevant and effective as possible, especially for this expanding demographic group."

The Pew Research Center notes that within two decades, the Hispanic share of the workforce will more than double to 31 percent. Research shows, however, that Hispanic employees are not always familiar with insurance products because the benefits were not offered in their country of origin, seen as a luxury product or provided by the government.

To better serve this fast-growing customer group, Unum is creating a collection of materials for Spanish-speaking customers.

"Many insurance companies are making an effort to reach the Hispanic market, but Unum is unique in that we are creating our pieces from scratch," Acuna said. "Instead of a literal translation of existing materials, we're starting fresh so we can be more relevant to the Hispanic demographic."

For the new videos series, Unum hired MARCA, a Miami-based advertising agency company that specializes in Hispanic marketing. The series of 11 videos was produced in easy-to-understand terms without complex insurance jargon.

The videos, which will be distributed or shown to employees during the benefits enrollment period, feature Unum's core products:

    --  group and voluntary life insurance;
    --  group and individual short term disability insurance;
    --  group long term disability insurance; and
    --  supplemental insurance, including Accident, Critical Illness and Cancer
        Insurance.

The videos are the latest addition to Unum's Hispanic capabilities. Over the past year, the company has continued to strengthen its customer service for Spanish-speaking consumers, including:

    --  increasing the number of bilingual benefits counselors across the
        country to help customers enroll in Unum's products and services;
    --  interviewing 86 percent of Spanish-speaking employees in their preferred
        language; and
    --  adding a bilingual benefits team in California to handle claims for
        Hispanic customers.
