Report Details Company’s Social Responsibility Practices
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Unum (NYSE: UNM) and its employees donated $6.6 million - a 10-percent
increase over the previous year - and thousands of volunteer hours to
charitable organizations in the United States and United Kingdom in
2009, part of its broader commitment to being a socially responsible
organization.
As outlined in the company’s 2010 Social Responsibility Report, the
company also remained an industry advocate on important public policy
issues and maintained its commitment to conservation and recycling.
“In our communities, we look for opportunities to contribute to positive
change,” writes Unum President and CEO Tom Watjen in the report released
today. “We also work to improve the environment for future generations
and focus on finding ways for the public and private sector to work
together for the common good.”
Highlights from Unum’s 2010 Social Responsibility Report include:
- Community support: While Unum actively supports organizations
that advocate for the arts, health and wellness, and people with
disabilities, its primary focus is on education. The company believes
that the more opportunities students have to learn, the more chances
they have to succeed in life. That’s why, for instance, Unum has
adopted an inner-city high school in Worcester, Mass., given more than
45 schools in Chattanooga grants to improve achievement levels and
sponsored the Maine Compact for Higher Education.
- Public policy: Unum employees meet regularly with legislators
and government officials in the U.S. and the U.K. to educate them
about employee benefits and the importance of financial protection for
working people. Because decisions in Congress and Parliament can have
a significant impact on its markets and customers, the company’s goal
is to illustrate the industry’s contribution to the general economy
and its role in protecting people’s financial well-being.
- Environmental responsibility: From energy efficiency to
recycling, Unum is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and
being environmentally responsible in everything it does. In fact, the
company was named one of the greenest companies in America in 2009 by Newsweek
magazine, which ranks companies based on their environmental
performance, policies and reputation.
