Former special assistant to President George W. Bush to join
company’s government relations team in D.C.
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based insurer Unum Group (NYSE: UNM) has hired Martin
McGuinness as its vice president of government affairs. He will join the
financial protection benefits company’s government relations team in
Washington, D.C. later this month.

company,” McGuinness said. “Federal legislation and regulation continue
to have an increasing role in financial services, and I’m looking
forward to helping Unum engage in Washington in a positive and
productive way.”
McGuinness comes to Unum from the American Insurance Association, where
he was the vice president of federal affairs. Before that, he served as
one of President George W. Bush’s top liaisons to the U.S. House of
Representatives with responsibility for developing and executing White
House strategy on priority issues.
His background also includes several legislative positions with various
members of Congress as well as a role as senior manager at Washington
Council Ernst & Young.

and chief government affairs officer at Unum. “His depth of experience
and his insight into these sectors make him a fine addition to our team.”
McGuinness earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from George
Mason University and his master’s degree in legislative affairs from
George Washington University.
