Unum ranks No. 1 in Business Insurance list

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Business Insurance announced today that Unum (NYSE: UNM) is the Best Place to Work in Insurance. Thirty-three other companies were recognized in the program.

This honor from Business Insurance follows a number of recent accolades for Unum. It was named No. 1 in Maine's "Best Places to Work" category for large employers, was a finalist for Best Employer in Tennessee, received the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles Award and was named to Newsweek's list of Greenest Companies in America.

"While awards like these certainly aren't the only measure of success, they are in many respects a barometer for how well we are doing in certain areas," said Marie Clements, assistant vice president of human resources for Unum. "For that reason, we do take great pride in winning. The recognition from Business Insurance is especially gratifying because it focuses on our industry and evaluates us in our professional peer group."

This is the first year for the Best Places to Work in Insurance recognition program. It was open to all publicly or privately held insurers, agents and brokers with at least 25 employees working in the United States and serving the commercial market.

The assessment is a two-part process designed to gather detailed data about each participating company. It includes a questionnaire for the employer to complete and a survey of randomly selected employees.

"One of the most meaningful aspects of the best employer awards is that they weigh heavily what our employees say about the company, which makes winning all the more gratifying," said Clements. "It tells us that our employees are genuinely satisfied with our work environment."

To make the Best Places to Work in Insurance list, each company had to demonstrate "a minimum standard of excellence," said Peter B. Burke, president of co-sponsor organization Best Companies Group. "We do have our eyes set on an overall level of satisfaction that we want to see," he said.
